Use Descriptive Anchor Text
When linking from another site or directory to yours it's best to use anchor text (the link text) that is keyword descriptive rather than the official name of the site.
For example with my site Codefixer when I request a link or submit to a directory, I would use one of my important keyword phrases such as ASP Tutorials rather than the official title name
www.Codefixer.com as the anchor text.
Anchor text gets a lot of weight in search engine algorithms because the linked text is usually relevant to the landing page, the official title means nothing to search engines.
Here's an example of the power of IBL's (Inbound Links) using descriptive anchor
text.
If you go to Google.com and type in 'miserable failure' the White House and George Bush appears as the top
listing. Well there's certainly no text on this site or keywords that relate the site to miserable failure.
It's there because other people (even though it's slightly underhand) have created
enough links to that webpage using keywords in the anchor text i.e. 'Miserable Failure'. The anchor text should be keyword rich and is definitely one of the factors that
helps you rank well in Google for your specific keywords/keyphrase. Read the coverage on the BBC website.
