  • Have other relevant sites link to yours.
  • Submit your site to relevant directories such as the Open Directory Project and Yahoo!, as well as to other industry-specific expert sites.

It's spelt out in black and white, Google attaches great importance to IBL's (Inbound Links) when ranking your site. The more links to your site the better, and the best way and easiest way to get one way links is to submit to free directories.

It's important to submit your site into the appropriate category as Google also takes into consideration the context of where your link appears, it's better to have a web design site listed in the directory's web design category. 

SEO is an ongoing effort and there are many other factors, though the first step in internet marketing especially for Google is getting as many links to your site by submitting to as many free directories as possible. Building a smart linking campaign will eventually pay off.
