What is SEO?
SEO is an acronym for Search Engine Optimisation. SEO is all about improving the position of your website's webpages within the returned results or search engine
listings that search engines and directories provide.
Figure 1 below shows a screenshot of the top 3 results returned by Google for the keywords/keyphase 'ASP web developer Belfast'.

You might be asking yourself why SEO is important. Well it’s estimated that over 80% of traffic to your site gets there from search engines. It doesn’t take a genius to work out that if your site isn't listed prominently in the major search engines then your website will gain very little traffic.
It’s recommended that you try to obtain a top 3 page position for the keywords and key phrases that target your site. The keywords simply identify what your site is about to the searcher and help the search engine bring you targeted traffic. For example if you sold secondhand cars, your keywords/keyphrase might be ‘secondhand cars Belfast’.
SEO is not an exact science but there are plenty of ways to increase the rankings of your site. Many of these steps should be identified in the planning and building stages of your website. If your web design company doesn’t bring the matter to your attention then either they don’t wish to confuse you, or they simply don’t place a great emphasis on SEO.
